"Kara": After narrowly escaping danger a mother must once again face her ex-husband in order to protect her daughter

Character descriptions:
Mary Clay-Wilson (working name):
Age 25-28 (scene 1), Age 30-35 (rest of the film)
Mary is a hardworking mother that loves her daughter more than anything in the world. She was tricked by the charming facade of sociopath John Clay and married him after finding out she was pregnant with Kara (around age 16/17). She began what she thought would be a passionate and exciting marriage only to discover abuse, pain, and suffering. Mary and Kara narrowly escape danger when Kara turns ten, finally gaining the courage to leave John and his abusive ways. Mary wants to give her daughter a normal life, but she realises that she can never erase the early years she endured John's abuse. She is oppressed by her own guilt, by shame, and by the victim mentality years of abuse inflicted on her. Through it all, she finds her hope in her daughter and strives to love her and protect her each day.

Kara Clay:
Age 15-19, A brilliant young girl with some mental illness, Kara is good at hiding it but is indeed a sociopath like her father. Early childhood trauma has not helped her condition but she adjusts to situations brilliantly, adapting and hiding in plain sight. She does share an emotional connection with her mother--rare for a sociopath. Likely born out of survival instinct, her mother is an important person in Kara's life. Though she rarely feels anything close to 'joy' or 'happiness' she does want her mother to experience that and more than that she wants her mother to be safe--so much so she'd go to any length necessary.

John Clay (working name):
Age 30-35 (scene 1), Age 37-42 (rest of the film)
John is a sociopath. He feels no empathy for others, he is selfish, he is cunning, and he is charming. He is cool, calculated, and deadly. You do not cross John. He passionate--but not in the emotional sense. He is robotic, clinical, and determined to get what he wants--power, control, self-gain. He will stop at nothing to get what he wants in any given situation and he has the intelligence to get away with it--worse still, he knows this. He is egotistical, narcissistic, and yet with the right smile and a good line he can suck you. He'll charm you with his steely eyes as he slowly wraps his hands around your throat to throttle you, seducing you as you die by his own hands.

Young Kara Clay:
Age 8-12, the younger, childhood version of 'Kara Clay'.-- A brilliant young girl with some mental illness, Kara is good at hiding it but is indeed a sociopath like her father.

Lawyer (Kent Brown):
Age 40-50
Kent is an upright man, fed up with the system, but nevertheless subject to it. He does his best to serve his client and this case drives him up a wall because he knows he can't win. He is not terrible passionate, he doesn't have much of a spine, but he does have a heart for the weak and that is more than many can say.

Sgt. (Edward Jenkins):
A beat cop that has seen more evil than you or I care to think about, Sgt. Takes his coffee black, prefers to write a warning rather than a ticket, hates dirty cops, and hates those that hurt the innocent even more.
